FAQ
Questions about WHMIS and this certificate
About WHMIS
Is WHMIS training mandatory?
Yes, for anyone who works with or near hazardous products in a Canadian workplace. Each province and territory, and the federal government for federally regulated workplaces, requires employers to provide WHMIS education and training before exposure and to review it at least annually.
What's the difference between WHMIS 1988, WHMIS 2015 and "WHMIS 2025"?
WHMIS 1988 was the original system. WHMIS 2015 aligned Canada with the GHS and replaced the old symbols with the pictograms used today. There is no official "WHMIS 2025"; the phrase refers to the December 2025 amendments to the Hazardous Products Regulations, which updated WHMIS 2015 to GHS revision 7. This course covers those amendments.
Who needs WHMIS?
Workers who use, handle, store or dispose of hazardous products; anyone who could be exposed during normal work, maintenance or emergencies; and the people who supervise them. That includes cleaners, cooks, mechanics, hairdressers, lab staff, warehouse and construction workers, farm workers and many office roles.
Does WHMIS apply in the United States?
No. The US uses OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom). Both are based on the GHS so the pictograms look the same, but a WHMIS certificate is for Canadian workplaces.
About the certificate
Will employers accept it?
Employers choose their own provider for the generic education component; no regulator approves providers or issues certificates. Our certificate shows name, date, score, jurisdiction and a verifiable ID, which is what employers check. They remain responsible for workplace-specific training and may ask you to complete their own module as well.
Is this a government certificate?
No, and no WHMIS certificate is. Health Canada sets the supplier rules; provinces set employer rules; neither issues certificates to workers. A certificate of completion from a training provider is the standard record.
How long is it valid?
There is no legal expiry. Employers must review training at least annually, so most treat a certificate as current for a year. Yours shows a recommended review date 12 months after completion.
Can I use it at a new job?
Yes; generic education is portable. The new employer must still give you site-specific training on their products.
What does the certificate show?
Your name, the course title, completion date, exam score, jurisdiction, recommended review date, a certificate ID and a QR code linking to the verification page. The second page is a wallet card.
How do employers verify it?
At whmiscert.ca/verify with the certificate ID, or by scanning the QR code. They see your name, completion date, jurisdiction and review date; never your score or email.
Can I change the name on the certificate?
The name is what you entered at enrolment. If there's a typo, email us within 7 days with the certificate ID and we'll reissue it once at no charge.
About the course and exam
Is the course really free?
Yes. The eight modules and the exam are free, with unlimited retakes. You pay CAD 24.95 only if you pass and want the certificate.
How long does it take?
About an hour for the modules and 15 minutes for the exam.
What is on the exam?
25 multiple-choice questions covering all eight modules: hazard classes and pictograms, labels, SDSs, routes of entry and health effects, controls and PPE, rights and duties, and the December 2025 changes. Pass mark 80%.
What if I fail?
Retake it free, as often as you need. The result shows which modules to review, and the questions change.
Do I need to create an account?
No. We ask for your name, email and province when you start the exam so the certificate can be issued and emailed.
Can I take it on my phone?
Yes. The course, exam and certificate download all work on phones and tablets.
Is it available in French or in Quebec?
Not yet. The course is English-only and is not offered in Quebec, where SIMDUT training must be in French.
Payment
What does it cost?
CAD 24.95 one-time for the certificate; CAD 9.95 for the annual refresher. No subscription. Prices are in Canadian dollars; taxes, where applicable, are shown at checkout.
What payment methods do you accept?
Credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, through Stripe. We never see your card details.
Can I get a refund?
The certificate is a digital product delivered immediately, so sales are final, except for duplicate charges, delivery failure we can't fix, or where the law requires. See the refund policy.
Can my employer pay for several people?
Yes. See the employers page; for ten or more we invoice the company and provide a completion list.
