How it works
From first module to verified certificate
1. The course is free, and open
No account, no payment, no email to read the eight modules. Start with module 1 and work through in any order. Each module ends with knowledge checks and a "mark complete" button; progress is saved in your browser so you can finish on your phone on the bus and your laptop at home (progress is per device).
2. Enrol for the exam
When you're ready, the exam page asks for the name that should appear on the certificate, your email, and the province or territory you work in. That's the only information we collect. You can opt in to an annual review reminder; it's off by default.
3. The exam
25 multiple-choice questions drawn from a larger bank, spread across all eight modules, with answer order shuffled. The pass mark is 80%, which is the standard most employers and training providers use. Questions are graded on our server, so answers are never visible in the page. If you don't pass, you see which modules to review and can retake immediately, free, with a different set of questions.
4. Pay once you've passed
Your pass is saved for 90 days. Pay CAD 24.95 through Stripe (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay) and the certificate is issued immediately. Prices are shown before you start; there is nothing to subscribe to.
5. Your certificate
A two-page PDF: the certificate itself (Letter, landscape) and a wallet card sized 3.375 × 2.125 inches with cut marks. Both carry your name, completion date, exam score, recommended review date, a unique certificate ID and a QR code that opens the verification page. The PDF is emailed to you and can be re-downloaded from the link in that email at any time.
6. Employer verification
Anyone can enter a certificate ID at whmiscert.ca/verify or scan the QR code and see the holder's name, completion date, jurisdiction and recommended review date. Scores and emails are never shown. If you renew with us later, the old record points to the new one.
7. A year later
Employers must review WHMIS training at least annually. If you opted in, we email you at eleven and twelve months with a link to the refresher: re-read the "what changed" module, pass a 15-question check, and a new certificate is issued for CAD 9.95. Or retake the full course free whenever you like.
What this certificate is and isn't. It documents that you completed the generic WHMIS education component and passed an exam on it. Your employer must still provide workplace-specific training on the actual products and procedures at your site, and keep its own training records. No government body issues or approves WHMIS certificates.
